frank sinatra’s My Funny Valentine was on repeat in my mind yesterday.
pink heart shaped pancakes are pretty. I’m certain all pancakes from henceforth will be in some type of cookie cutter shape, plus food coloring. it’s too much fun to pass up!
cream sherry, cheese and crackers. I could have stopped here. I love cheese oh so much.
but i didn’t stop there. stephen likes steak and we’re both vegetable lovers, so i made asparagus and cauliflower pancakes…which i’ll be sharing the recipe later this week. i’m in love with cauliflower and cheese. these two wonderful things together is simply heaven.
okay i have to tell you something… I am a plant killer. No really, i am. I’ve killed spices, flowers, vegetables. You name it, i’ve probably killed it. the only thing i’ve kept alive is sun flowers when i was a little girl, but things change when you get older and i’ve somehow lost my green thumb.
i’ve been eyeing orchids for a long time now. every time i walk into a whole foods, or fresh market they are sitting in their pots looking at me. they are charming and unusual; i’m really hoping i can keep them alive! Lauren, a sweet friend of mine, said to water them with ice. This is a genius way of not over whelming the flowers with a lot of water at once.
anyone else have a tip… or two?
here’s to my first house plant. thank you stephen! i love you. xoxo

I’m a plant killer too.
My stepmother is an orchid genius and she also recommends watering with ice and also replanting in a larger pot if it came in a tiny pot. There’s also special soil that’s good for orchids that’s much better than the mossy stuff many orchids come planted in. I forget what it’s called but I think you can get it at most Walmarts. Unfortunately, she intervened too late to save mine, but I got a bamboo plant for Christmas so hopefully it will be harder to kill!
Thank you so much Stephanie! I hope its doing okay… it looks healthy as of right now. I should probably give it some ice…sounds funny! I’m going to check out some bigger pots, you’re probably right! Good luck with your bamboo plant! When Stephen and I lived in Charlotte last year there were bamboo plants outside our condo, i had no idea what to do with them! One day our neighbor told us they water them…haha
oops!
what yummy foods! are those trisket crackers i spy? i LOVE those things…
oh. my. gosh.
i love triskets too! They are triskets, the tomato olive oil ones…mmmm
it has taken everything inside me not to eat the whole box!
I’m a plant killer too! I used to water my mom’s plants while she was on vacation and they would always wilt and get sad. but as soon as my mom came back, they’d be back to their perky, lush selves. I’d like to get some real plants but I’m afraid our cat would eat them. He’s going through his chewing things phase right now. Dinner looks super yummy!
My mom is a miracle plant grower too! i felt like i lived in a jungle when I was growing up. my mom can make anything live forever…and it will be big and super green.
i don’t have that magic :-/
I highly recommend starting with a Pothos. I was a plant killer til I bought 2 little leaves for .99 over 15 years ago. Those 2 little leaves are now 5 LARGE pots that will most likely end up split yet again this spring. I love it as they make great hanging plants (they look like their wilting, you water them = they bounce back within a few hours). Growing up my paternal grandmother had one that hung in the middle of her living room window, climbed up to the rod and back and forth a few times. It got to where she couldn’t open/close the curtains without disturbing that plant.
Thanks Kay, that’s a great idea! I’m afraid Stephen bought this orchid for me for Valentines Day though! I hope I can keep it alive. If it does die, I’ll have to look into getting a Pothos!
I killed two plants over Christmas inside my house and I have killed two bushes outside of my house… It is terrible! Don’t feel like you alone in this fight to keep plants alive!
