Mainly About Hair

August 22, 2013

Let’s talk about hair.

I’ve been meaning to write about this for awhile, but I wanted to make sure I gave my experiment long enough to know if it’s a good idea or not. After six months I’ve found that it’s an excellent idea. I do not shampoo my hair; in fact, I haven’t since January. You may already do this, or know about the harsh chemicals that are found in shampoo products. If you haven’t made the jump to ditch shampooing, I want to encourage you to do it! I use a mixture of baking soda and water to wash my hair and I only use it on my scalp. It works like a charm.

When I first started, it was really weird. There was no silky bubbles or perfume that I was used to. Also, for about two weeks I had oily hair. That was awkward, but it passed. For so long shampoo was striping my locks of their natural oils. When I stopped shampooing my hair was still working over time to produce oils. After two weeks, my hair was like, “Hey, she’s not striping our oils anymore…we like her.” Okay, so maybe maybe my hair can’t talk, but if it could it would thank me.

Since not shampooing my hair has grown faster, stronger and it rarely falls out. When I shampooed after washing my hair, tons of hairs would fall out. That’s really sad, but not anymore. My hair is happy happy and so am I.

Edit: I condition with apple cider vinegar or Trader Joe’s organic conditioner.

I have been wanting to try this. How often do you wash your hair? I only wash my hair about 2-3 times per week right now. Do you condition it? If so what do you use? Hardly any of my hair fell out while I was pregnant and now it’s coming out like crazy. I hear this is normal but it still makes me feel weird like I’m losing my hair.

I wash every other day. I condition with either apple cider vinegar or trader joes organic conditioner; depends what I have on hand.

My hair used to fall out all the time, but now it rarely does, it’s so nice! It seriously has grown so fast too! I don’t care to shampoo ever again. You should try it out…although for the first two weeks I suggest just wearing your hair up, your hair will be extra oily because it will be a little confused, haha!

Yay! I’m glad one of my favourite bloggers does the same hair routine as I do! I have only been using the baking soda and vinegar since July, though, but it’s definitely worth it (and more inexpensive)!

*Blushes* Thank you!! It totally is worth it. My husband does it to and likes it better. Yes, it saves so much money! Now I don’t feel bad for buying a more expensive hair spray!

Amber!! I may try this! My hair has been falling out like crazy! Before trying this, did you shampoo your hair every day?

You should totally try it! Your hair will be super oily for a couple of weeks though, so wear your hair up! Before no shampooing, I shampooed every other day.

By the by, my husband calls you “the first lady president”!

I’m interested in trying this out! How much baking soda do you use each time you wash your hair?

I also go running a few days a week in the humidity that is South Florida. Do you think the baking soda will be enough to clean tangled sweat soaked hair?

Hello Kristina! I have a squirt bottle that I use to mix baking soda + water in. I use roughly two tablespoons of baking soda per cup of water. Make sure your water is hot so the baking soda will dissolve.

I live in North Carolina and it’s quite humid here as well (yuck!) I’ve been using this method for a while and it’s worked very well!
