Years ago I was reading The Wedding at Cana in John 2:1-11 and a simple truth hit me:
If Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine, there has to be something magical about wine…
I love that Jesus’ mother went to Him and said, “They have no wine.” (verse 3) Like it was a problem. And I get that now—it was a big deal that they ran out of wine.
Afterward the headwaiter was like, “Wow, this is great wine.” Paraphrased, but you get the idea—Jesus made some great wine! So of course, I decided to follow Jesus’ example, because duh He know’s stuff. No surprise there.

While learning more about wine I discovered *spoiler alert* there is a lot to wine. Like, so much I doubt I’ll ever learn it all or enough. Which, for me, makes wine pretty magical.
Drinking wine involves three of your senses:
What color do you see?
What do you smell?
What are you tasting?
You have to look at the color of the wine you are drinking, smell it, taste it and then think about it. It gets really complicated, real fast. But also extremely intriguing.
Then there’s glassware. Oh yes, it matters. The shape of your glass will either enhance your experience or ruin it. I could write an entire post about glassware, but I’ll stop myself! Back to why I love wine…
I like that I can open a bottle of grenache from some wonderful city in Spain and instantly, in a magical way, be in Spain—if only for a moment (okay, I know I have a wild imagination, just go with it). I also like to know what types of wine my favorite authors enjoyed. For instance, C.S. Lewis loved port. It’s a bit too jammy for me, but he smoked a lot so I imagine the contrast was nice.
Relationships play an important part when drinking wine as well. There’s something really special about sharing a bottle of your favorite wine with friends you love. Or sharing bubbles while watching The Bachelor! It’s the best.
I use the Vivino App, you can follow me here, but I’m also looking forward to sharing more bottles here. I’ll share my favorite wines, bottles I probably won’t buy again, and also wines that I think are a great deal!
Cheers!
